Switzerland vs Portugal

Stade de Genève plays host to an exciting UEFA Nations League match-up between out-of-sorts Switzerland and high-flying Portugal.

An underwhelming 1-0 home defeat to Spain last time out made underperforming Switzerland become the first-ever nation to lose all three opening matches in the 2022/23 Nations League season. The Swiss’ noticeable decline in the competition has seen them pick up just one win from their last nine Nations League fixtures (D3, L5). A 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Portugal earlier this month stands for their heaviest defeat in that nine-game sequence. Heading into this matchday as betting outsiders, Murat Yakin’s men will hope to defy underdog status for the first time in seven matches (D2, L4), all competitions included. A run of three wins from six home outings in the post-Euro 2020 period (D2, L1) could be encouraging.

As for Portugal, a quick-fire first-half double fired Fernando Santos’ side to a comfortable 2-0 triumph over the Czech Republic last time out, catapulting the ‘Selecao’ to the top of the section. Though unbeaten in all three competitive away matches since a lacklustre Euro 2020 campaign (W1, D2), the visitors have drawn their last two away games, both of which featured under 2.5 goals. Excluding their sorrow Euro 2020 participation, Portugal are unbeaten in their 11 previous internationals held on foreign soil (W6, D5). An eye-catching streak spanning over a period of almost three years also includes six clean sheets, which has been the case in Portugal’s two most recent Nations League outings.
