Spain vs Germany

MHPArena in Stuttgart sets the stage for a mouth-watering Euro 2024 quarter-final tie between Spain and Germany.

Through to the quarter-finals for the fourth time across the last five Euro finals, Spain advanced past the group stages as the only team to win all three matches. In doing so, they didn’t concede a goal before an early own goal put them on the back foot against Georgia in the round of 16, only for Luis de la Fuente’s side to turn the game on its head and run out 4-1 victors. The Iberian heavyweights head into proceedings as slight favorites after not losing a competitive encounter against Germany since 1988. They’ve since gone unbeaten in six such fixtures (W3, D3), including a thumping 6-0 triumph in the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League. The last time La Furia Roja met the Germans at a major tournament, they claimed a narrow 1-0 win in the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

On the other hand, except for a 1-1 draw against Austria on Matchday 3, the Germans boast a faultless record at Euro 2024, having won the other three outings by a combined score of 9-1, most recently dispatching Denmark 2-0 in the opening knockout round. Julian Naglesmann’s men came out on top of a nail-biting contest marred by a VAR controversy to set up their first quarter-final appearances at the Euros since 2016. Riding on an eye-catching eight-game unbeaten run (W6, D2), Die Mannschaft bid to take advantage of playing on home turf to end a 28-year title drought at the grandest continental stage. Worryingly for the Germans, they’ve won none of their last four meetings with Spain (D3, L1).
