Southampton vs Liverpool

Southampton’s farewell Premier League fixture pits them against Liverpool at St Mary’s Stadium this weekend.

The hosts had it coming. Southampton’s 11-year stint in the Premier League officially ends this weekend. As they approach their final match, their descent has been marked by lackluster displays, as they have endured a winless streak of 12 games (D3, L9). This unfortunate run stands as their third-longest period without a victory in their entire history of the league. Liverpool’s visit to St Mary’s can only make things worse, with the ‘Saints’ suffering ten defeats in their last 11 Premier League H2Hs, barring a 1-0 home win in January 2021. Moreover, Ruben Selles’ men have lost their last league game in each of their last two seasons, going down by a three-goal margin on both occasions.

On the other hand, Liverpool will return to the Europa League next season for the first time since Jurgen Klopp’s maiden campaign in charge after last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa ruled them out of the top-four race. That result snapped the visitors’ seven-game winning league streak and saw them fail to keep a clean sheet for the first time in four matches. However, the ‘Reds’ have conceded under 1.5 goals in their last 13 top-flight encounters against Southampton, suggesting a second consecutive away league win ‘to nil’ could be on the cards following a 3-0 thumping of Leicester City on their most recent Premier League travel.
