Salzburg vs Liverpool

Red Bull Arena forms the backdrop for a handsomely-looking pre-season match-up between Red Bull Salzburg and Liverpool.

Salzburg’s defending Austrian Bundesliga campaign got off to a flying start, as they swept long-standing rivals Austria Vienna aside, courtesy of a 3-0 home triumph. But a lack of consistency has seen the Red Bull outfit alternate between winning (2) and losing (2) across their last four outings, casting doubt on their ability to deliver week in, week out. Salzburg’s overall experience against Liverpool is not fond by any stretch of the imagination. After suffering a brace of defeats in the 2019/20 Champions League group stages, the Austrian heavyweights squandered a 2-0 halftime lead in an exhibition fixture in 2020, drawing 2-2.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have bounced back from an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United in their opening pre-season friendly, beating the likes of Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig by an aggregate score of 7-0. Mega-money summer signing Darwin Nunez lived up to the billing in his second appearance for the ‘Reds’ as he came off the bench to notch up four second-half goals in a 5-0 thumping of Leipzig last time out. Excluding a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League final and their pre-season fixtures outside Europe, Jurgen Klopp’s men have not lost a single match away from Anfield in 2022 (W16, D2). What’s more, they netted 2+ goals in 72% of those fixtures (13/18).
