Republic of Ireland vs Gibraltar

The Republic of Ireland’s hopes of reigniting their woeful Euro 2024 qualifying campaign face a fairly straightforward challenge as outsiders Gibraltar arrive at the Aviva Stadium.

The Republic of Ireland suffered a 2-1 defeat against Greece, which marked their second consecutive loss in the Euro 2024 qualification campaign. In light of this result, manager Stephen Kenny acknowledged the criticism directed towards him. However, the upcoming home match against Gibraltar, ranked 201st by FIFA, presents an ideal opportunity for the Republic of Ireland to rejuvenate their struggling campaign and regain momentum. The ‘Boys in Green’ faced Gibraltar four times in the past decade, emerging victorious on each occasion without conceding. With that in mind, this is a presentable chance for Ireland to address their defensive shortcomings and a second defeat in a home Euro qualifier since 2011 (W8, D6, L1). Anything less would significantly derail their dwindling chances of securing a first Euro qualification since 2016.

On the other hand, a 3-0 home defeat to 2022 World Cup runners-up France last time out may not be considered a disgrace given the teams’ positions in FIFA rankings. But it was another Euro qualification disappointment for minnows Gibraltar, as they’ve now lost all 21 matches in qualifying campaigns for the most prestigious continental tournament. Gibraltar’s history in Euro qualifiers includes a humiliating 7-0 loss against Ireland in their first-ever away match in 2017. Securing at least one point would be a significant milestone for Gibraltar and a breakthrough in their Euro qualification journey. However, the visitors have conceded multiple goals in each of their ten Euro qualifying fixtures away from home, highlighting the possibility for another heavy defeat. Interestingly, all three of their matches in this current qualification cycle have ended 3-0, with Gibraltar trailing at halftime in each of those games.
