Paris Saint-Germain vs Atletico Madrid

Parc des Princes forms the backdrop for a heavyweight UEFA Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.

Stranded in mid-table of the newly formatted league phase after only winning once in their opening three Champions League fixtures (D1, L1), PSG will be out to atone for a gut-wrenching 1-1 home draw against PSV Eindhoven last time out. Goals have been at a premium for Luis Enrique’s side this season, as they only netted twice in those three matches while they’ve yet to score before halftime. If it’s any consolation, their only European win this season came against Spanish outfit Girona on this ground (1-0), strengthening their recent record against La Liga clubs (W4, L1). However, PSG must find their feet in front of goal to increase their chances of beating Atletico Madrid in their maiden encounter after only scoring twice in their last five Champions League outings!

Visiting Atletico Madrid sneaked into the win column at the weekend, netting on either side of halftime to beat Las Palmas 2-0 at home. However, Diego Simeone’s men have stuttered at Europe’s top table after a 2-1 comeback win against RB Leipzig in round one, suffering back-to-back multi-goal margin defeats to Benfica (0-4) and Lille (1-3). As a result, Los Rojiblancos can ill-afford a slip-up in Paris. Worryingly, Atletico’s travel sickness has seen them lose seven of their last ten Champions League away matches (W1, D2), highlighting the size of the task awaiting them this week. They could perhaps draw heart from two clean sheets in domestic action last week (W2).
