Manchester United vs Liverpool

Manchester United’s Asian Tour gets underway this midweek with a mouth-watering clash against familiar foes Liverpool at the Rajamangala Stadium, Thailand.

Led by new manager Erik ten Hag, Manchester United will be looking to leave five trophyless seasons firmly behind them and bounce back from an underwhelming sixth-place Premier League finish last season. While waiting for ten Hag to put his stamp on the squad he has inherited from interim boss Ralf Rangnick, the ‘Red Devils’ are keen to avenge a brace of embarrassing H2H defeats last season. Man United lost both Premier League meetings with Liverpool in 2021/22 by an aggregate score of 9-0, conceding 4+ goals in each contest. Moreover, they capped off an abysmal last season with back-to-back reverses without scoring and have won just once of their last six matches against domestic rivals (D1, L4).

On the other hand, Liverpool fell tantalisingly short of a historic quadruple bid last season and eventually had to settle for a brace of domestic cup crowns. In addition to finishing one point below Manchester City in the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a Champions League heartbreak at the hands of Real Madrid. The ‘Reds’ are now looking to kickstart a new cycle after severing ties with long-serving stalwart Sadio Mane and bringing in Uruguayan prodigy Darwin Nunez from Benfica. Unlike Man United, Liverpool have a good starting point, as they’ve not lost a single fixture to fellow Premier League rivals in 2022, eight of the last nine, including four in a row ahead of the kick-off.
