Los Angeles vs San Jose Earthquakes

BMO Stadium plays host to a mouth-watering Major League Soccer showdown between Los Angeles and San Jose Earthquakes.

Los Angeles’ troubles continued on Wednesday as a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to cross-town rivals LA Galaxy stretched their losing MLS streak to three matches. Those results have somewhat derailed their chances of finishing atop the Western Conference, leaving them three points below pacesetters St. Louis City. The upcoming home return cannot put manager Steve Cherundolo to rest, knowing his men have only won once in their last four league games at the BMO Stadium (D1, L2). Entertainment has been relatively sparse as three of those four fixtures saw one or both teams fail to score in matches garnering under 1.5 total goals. Against this backdrop, Los Angeles’ last five home league meetings with San Jose have seen over 2.5 goals and both sides scoring.

Meanwhile, San Jose’s form curve has taken a downward trajectory since a 2-1 home win over Philadelphia Union in early June, as they’ve gone winless in four league matches (D2, L2) after that. But they’ve at least been fun to watch, with their last three MLS contests containing 3+ goals, with both sides hitting the net. Since all three games featured a ‘BTTS’ theme after halftime, there could be plenty of second-half action at the BMO Stadium. Unfortunately for the ‘Quakes,’ they’re likely to be on the receiving end of it, at least based on their disastrous ten-game away league record this term (W1, D3, L6). Indeed, they’ve averaged just 0.9 goals per MLS travel in 2023.
