Liechtenstein vs Iceland

Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz plays host to Liechtenstein’s low-profile Euro 2024 qualifying Group J clash against out-of-sorts Iceland.

All too familiar with the feeling of losing, Liechtenstein experienced another underwhelming continental defeat, going down 4-0 at Portugal in their opening Euro 2024 qualifier last time out. Considering Liechtenstein’s most recent competitive triumph dates back to September 2020, it comes as no surprise they languish as low as 198th in the FIFA ranking. But there’s not much reason for optimism, given that victory came against the world’s worst side San Marino. On top of that, the ‘Blue-Reds’ have lost their last 14 internationals in a row, conceding multiple goals 12 times! Equally unimpressive on the opposite side of the pitch, they failed to get on the scoresheet in 13 of those 14 matches, suggesting a repeat of a 3-0 thumping of Iceland from 2007 is off the table.

In the meantime, visiting Iceland must avenge that defeat if they’re to consolidate their hopes of qualifying for only their second Euro finals following an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Bosnia & Herzegovina on matchday one. After missing out on the last two major tournaments, the visitors are keen to reboot, with the idea of ending a three-game winless run (D2, L1) topping Arnar Vidarsson’s list of priorities. However, the abovementioned loss in Bosnia was just the tip of the iceberg. Iceland last won a competitive match on the road in March 2021, though it was a 4-1 demolition of non-other than Liechtenstein as part of World Cup qualifying. Since then, they’ve failed to win on five consecutive travels in competitive action (D3, L2).
