Belarus vs Kosovo

Szusza Ferenc Stadion forms the backdrop for a must-win Euro 2024 qualifying showdown between Group I outsiders Belarus and Kosovo.

In their recent match against Israel, Belarus faced a crucial setback by conceding two goals beyond the 80th minute, resulting in a disappointing 2-1 defeat. This collapse marked their fourth consecutive loss, a streak they haven’t experienced since November 2021. Additionally, that result keeps them at the bottom of the European Championship qualifying Group I. Consequently, Belarus’ chances of reaching the Euro finals, which would be a first in the post-Soviet era, are diminishing rapidly. Indeed, the hosts have now lost six successive Euro qualifying matches. Adding to Belarus’ challenges, the upcoming encounter will take place at a neutral venue in Budapest without the support of a home crowd. It could be a blessing in disguise, considering they’ve won none of their last five outings on home turf (D2, L3).

Meanwhile, visiting Kosovo enter their first-ever head-to-head clash with Belarus after a goalless draw against Romania, a result which leaves them four points behind the qualification places. Their recent streak of five consecutive draws demonstrates their resilience, but the fact that they couldn’t hold onto leads in three of those matches is a cause for concern. It is crucial for Edward Iordanescu’s team to overcome this barrier and secure a first victory in the European Championship qualifying since their last win in October 2019 (D3, L3). Regardless of the outcome, there is an expectation of excitement in the upcoming match, as both teams have managed to score in each of Kosovo’s last six Euro qualifying outings on foreign soil (W1, D2, L3).
