Arsenal vs Everton

Arsenal’s pursuit of a first Premier League title in 19 years continues at the Emirates Stadium against relegation-battling Everton in midweek league action.

Following an underwhelming three-game league form in February (D1, L2), the ‘Gunners’ have got their title bid back on the rails with back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Leicester City. Avenging a 1-0 defeat from the reverse fixture would see Arsenal re-establish a five-point lead at the summit, but it won’t be a straightforward task. In addition to losing four of their last five Premier League meetings with Everton (W1), Mikel Arteta’s men have experienced a patch four-game league form on home turf (W1, D2, L1). But motivation won’t be in short supply, as after winning 99 of their 203 league encounters against Everton, Arsenal could become the first team in English football history to win 100+ league games against specific opposition.

On the other hand, after kickstarting his managerial tenure at Everton with a win over Arsenal, new boss Sean Dyche has overseen two defeats in his last three league matches in charge of the ‘Toffees’ (W1). Interestingly, each game (won/lost) in that sequence saw the winner on the day keep a clean sheet, highlighting the significance of opening the scoring. It will be up to Dyche to show Everton the way to win their first away top-flight match against a team staring the round at the top of the table since 1986. Indeed, the Merseyside strugglers have lost 19 of their 24 travels to face league leaders in the Premier League era (D5). Unfortunately for the visitors, their indifferent 13-game league form on hostile turf (W1, D5, L7) can hardly inspire much confidence.
